The stain shows where water appeared
A ceiling stain is a reason to investigate, but it does not identify the source by itself. Water may travel before it becomes visible. Roofing, attic condensation, plumbing or equipment can produce similar-looking marks.

Note the timing
- During rain: Write down whether the stain changes immediately or after prolonged rainfall.
- With wind-driven rain: Note which storms cause the problem and whether other rains do not.
- During snowmelt: Photograph any visible roof-edge ice from a safe ground location.
- During cold weather without rain: Record attic frost or moisture observations only where access is safe.
- After using plumbing or equipment: Share the timing with the appropriate professional.
These are clues, not a diagnosis. A home can have more than one moisture source.
Build a short record
Take a wide photo showing the room and a closer photo of the stain. Note the date, approximate size, weather and whether the area is actively wet. Keep earlier repair invoices or photos together so the person evaluating it can understand what has already been tried.
Avoid entering a wet or damaged attic just to gather evidence. Photos from an occupied room or safe ground location can still help.
Know when to keep clear
Stay away from a bulging or sagging ceiling, wet electrical fixtures and areas with active material failure. Do not puncture, press or disturb a bulging ceiling. Request appropriate professional help and protect belongings only when it is safe.

No. Some leaks occur only under particular conditions. Compare the area after similar weather and share the history.

No. It can support an investigation, but surface-temperature patterns require interpretation and confirmation.
