What does R-value mean?
R-value describes how strongly insulation resists heat flow. A higher number means greater resistance, but the installed result also depends on the material’s condition, coverage and correct installation. For a Batavia-area home, the useful question is not simply “How many inches should I add?” It is “What insulation is already there, what condition is it in, and what finished level is appropriate for this attic?”
Why inches alone can be misleading
Different insulation products provide different R-values at the same depth. A proposal should name the product and the intended installed level. A thermal image cannot directly measure the insulation’s R-value.
An attic can also have deep insulation in the middle and thin coverage near the edges or hatch. Ask how those uneven areas will be addressed, rather than relying on one measurement.
What should your estimate explain?
- The existing insulation type and visible condition
- The material to be installed and intended finished R-value
- Whether the stated R-value is the amount being added or the finished total
- How the attic hatch, edges and restricted spaces will be handled
- Whether moisture, airflow or air-leakage concerns need work first
- How the installed coverage will be documented
A number on a quote is more useful when it is tied to a product, an installation scope and the actual attic.
Common questions
Is a recommended R-value the same as a permit requirement?
No. General retrofit guidance and the requirements for a particular project serve different purposes. Confirm the applicable requirements and selected assembly before work begins.
Can you add insulation over existing material?
Sometimes. The existing material, moisture conditions, attic construction and product instructions need review first.
Will a higher R-value fix every comfort problem?
No. Air leakage, ducts, heating and cooling equipment, moisture and room layout can also affect comfort.
